Well, it's not surprising to anyone. You can ask any cyber professional and he would name China. In fact, in order to gain superiority over other countries in cyberspace, China has promoted cyber security as a culture thereby having a fairly good cyber literacy among its educated youth. In 2013 China took the top spot for the top spot of being the biggest hotbed of hackers in the world and it has remained so in 2016 and 2019. I think it will remain so for a long time to come. This has also led to an increase in cybercrime and a rise in the number of cybercriminals. According to various estimates, 41% of the world’s cyberattacks have their origin in China. It is believed that organized hacker networks are run in China which are supported by the People’s Liberation Army(PLA) of China. The purpose is to mostly hack in U.S govt networks and those of its allies.
2. UNITED STATES
As of 2013, the USA was the 2nd largest warehouse of hackers with such major hacker groups as Anonymous it takes a huge effect on the world with cyberattacks. One of the most famous US hackers was Kevin Mitnick who used to be a black hat hacker but is now a White or Red Hat hacker. The USA is the home to the world's most infamous hackers. In the global cyber attack traffic, Turkey takes a share of 4.7%. Turkish hackers have increased their activities in the last decade or so.
The Russia has 4th largest number of hackers. Falling from 6.8 percent in 2011 to 4.7 percent in 2012, Russia's digital attack traffic is falling, but it's still enough to slot this massive country into fourth place. The latest DNC hack would place Russia on number 4th in the list. This hack has evoked fears of the rigging of upcoming U.S Presidential elections by Russian hackers. As per estimates, nearly 4.7% of the global attack traffic is generated from Russia. Russian hackers are famous worldwide and have been known for attacking the most secure networks like those of Google, Facebook, and Apple.
Don't let its relatively small-sized country of population 23 million people fool you. This little island located near China is quite a hub for hackers. This Taiwan province of China accounted for 3.7 percent of the world's hacking traffic.
Brazil takes the 6th spot in terms of hackers. In fact, Brazil has the highest cyber-attack traffic not only in South- America but the entire southern hemisphere. South America's largest country comes in at sixth, accounting for 3.3 percent of the world's hacking traffic in the fourth quarter of 2012. The reason behind the huge number of cybercriminals in Brazil is the cashless nature of its economy. A good percentage population of Brazil uses electronic and online payment systems making them vulnerable to hackers.
Romania hackers are responsible for 2.8 percent of the world's hacking traffic during the last quarter of 2012, Romania comes in at seventh place. In recent years, the isolated town of Ramnicu Valcea has become a hacker hotbed. Most of the cyber-attacks from Romania can be traced to this one location.
India, standing 8th on the list of Cybercriminals and hackers, is the IT hub of the world. In recent times, India is witnessing an increasing number of cybercrimes. Italy is in the ninth position in the list of countries with the most hackers. About 1.6% of the total cyber crime activities across the world are taken by Italian hackers.
