A cyber attack is an assault launched by cybercriminals using one or more computers against a single or multiple computers or networks. A cyber attack can maliciously disable computers, steal data, or use a breached computer as a launch point for other attacks. Cybercriminals use a variety of methods to launch a cyberattack, including malware, phishing, ransomware, denial of service, among other methods. India has also faced some of the major cyber-attacks. We will see 5 biggest cyber attacks in India happening till date.


1. Pune Cosmos Bank Cyber Attack

It is one of the biggest cyber attack happened India.In the year 2018 Cosmos Bank Pune Suffered huge blow caused by a cyber attack. The hackers successfully breached the bank system and took away 94.42 crore rupees. The attackers cloned thousands of banks debit cards within two days. Money was wiped off while hacker gangs from around 28 countries immediately withdrew the amount as soon as they were informed. The fraudulent transactions were carried out on 11 and 13 august 2018. The malware attack done by hackers originated to Canada said told by bank manager.


2. UIDAI Aadhar Software Hack

In 2018 massive data breach happened in India. The UIDAI Aadhaar software used for enrolling new users, and get them into the Aadhaar database, have been subjected to a cyber attack using a software patch that disabled critical security features.

This software patch basically compromises the inbuilt security features on the Aadhaar enrolment software on three fronts. Firstly, it bypasses the need for authentication of the person using the software for enrolling new people. Secondly, the patch disables the software's inbuilt GPS security feature, letting anyone from anywhere access this software and enrolling people. And finally, the patch reduces the sensitivity of the Aadhaar enrolment software's iris recognition feature, thereby making it easier to manipulate the software using a photograph of the registered operator. About 1.1 billion persons data was breached. Data leaked by attackers included Aadhaar, PAN and mobile numbers, bank account numbers, IFSC codes and mostly every personal information of all individual cardholders.


3. Sim Swap Scam

In Navi Mumbai two hackers were arrested for transferring 4 crore rupees from multiple bank accounts in August 2018. They used illegal way to transfer money from several bank accounts. By fraudulently gaining SIM card information, both attackers blocked individuals’ SIM cards and with the help of fake document posts, they carried out transactions via online banking. They also tried to hack accounts of various targeted companies.


4. Wanna Cry Ransomware

This was one of biggest cyber attack on India. The Wannacry ransomware attack was a worldwide cyber attack in May 2017 by the Wannacry ransomware Cryptoworm, which targeted computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system by encrypting data of victims system and demanding ransom payments in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. India was also hit by this lethal cyber attack including central government. Cyber security experts said it affected at least 48,000 systems across various organizations in India, but not many came forward raising doubts whether possible ransomware attacks were being properly reported. It also hit banks and enterprises in India.


5. BSNL Malware Attack

The state-owned Telecom operator company was hit by the malware attack in 2017. The malware attack impacted nearly 2,000 broadband modems, where subscribers had not changed default password "admin". 60,000 modems became dysfunctional after the malware attack hit BSNL Telecom Circle. However the malware didnt affected the BSNL's core network, Billing or other system.
